Lake Street Bridge

September 2023 Update:  Construction of the bridge is ongoing.  The contractor continues installing piles in the riverbed that will support the new bridge.  Due to weather delays, the bridge is expected to be opened in November.  After the bridge is open to traffic, other work will continue, such as reconnecting utilities that run across the bridge.

Please take extra care and allow for extra time traveling through Town to maintain safety for everyone.  We appreciate the patience and understanding that motorists, pedestrians, and abutters have had during this disruptive process.

Lake Street Bridge Closure:  Beginning on July 24, 2023, the Lake Street bridge will be fully closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  The closure is required to facilitate the replacement of the bridge over Horn Pond Brook and is expected to be in place through October.

Due to the nature of the work, the road and sidewalk will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic at all times (24 hours per day, 7 days per week) for the duration of construction.  A temporary pedestrian bridge has been installed on the upstream side of the bridge (by the Department of Public Works building) to continue to allow pedestrian access between Main Street, Lake Street and the Horn Pond Bikeway.

Palmer and Lake Streets will remain open to access Wildwood Cemetery, Packer-Ellis Tennis Courts, DPW, and adjacent neighborhood streets. Access to Palmer and Lake Street will be maintained from Wildwood and Fletcher Streets.

Drivers should follow the posted detour routes to avoid the bridge closure (see map on back):

  • For vehicles traveling southbound from Main Street and Skillings Road: Follow the posted detour down Main Street to Church Street to Fletcher Street.
  • For vehicles traveling northbound from Wildwood Street: Follow the posted detour down Fletcher Street to Church Street to Main Street.

Work progress and schedule updates will be posted here when available.

We appreciate the patience that motorists, pedestrians, and abutters will have during this construction project.  Please exercise extra care and caution to maintain safety for everyone.

Please contact the Winchester Engineering Department at engineering@winchester.us or 781-721-7120 if you have any questions.
