Winchester Unitarian Society opens its 16th annual concert series Friday, November 5th, at 8:00 p.m., with a live online performance of Antonin Dvorák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, and Florence Price’s Piano Quintet in A Minor. Works will be performed by WUS Music Director John Kramer (piano) and musiConnect’s resident artists Betsy Hinkle (violin), Josh Addison (violin), Kevonna Shuford (viola), and Lizzy Cook (cello). Czech composer Dvorák completed this piano quintet in 1887. Five years later, he moved to the US to become director of what is now the Julliard School, in NYC. There, he immersed himself in African American and Native American music and advanced the idea that it be foundation of “American” music. This idea was realized uniquely in Florence Price’s compositions. Born in 1887 in Arkansas, Price graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1906. Her works combine European classical traditions with elements of African American spirituals and folk music.
